Dragon Boat Racing is said to be the faster growing watersport with over 50 million participants worldwide.  Dragon boats were traditionally made of Teak wood.  Modern racing boats are made of lightweight carbon fibre to the same original shape.  The 2,000 year old sport has its roots in the ritual of villages competing against each other in the region of the Pearl River Delta, Guangdong Province, South China.

Modern Dragon Boat Racing started in Hong Kong in 1976.  The Hong Kong Tourist Association recognised the power of the sport in attracting visitors to the city from around the world. A standard crewe is typically 22 comprising 20 paddlers, a drummer (at the front) and sweep (steerer to the back). Modern races are sprint events typically over 500 metres, 1,000 metres and 2,000 metres.
